Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Rockville Owner’s Guide

We install Famco chimney caps in Rockville every week, typically for $340-$620 installed. That price includes the cap matched to your flue dimensions, removal of the rusted unit, and a written photo record of the finished install before we leave the driveway. Most Rockville homeowners discover a failed Famco cap the same way: a rainy morning brings water down the firebox, a gusty night rattles loose metal against the crown, or a squirrel starts using the flue like a rent-free attic.

The failure picture is almost always the same when we get up there. The galvanized base has rusted through at the corners, the mesh has pulled away from the frame, or the lid has warped enough to let rain past the drip edge. If you’re reading this, chances are your Famco cap has been on that flue for eight to fifteen years, and Maryland weather finally won. That’s not a defect in the product. It’s what Montgomery County’s freeze-thaw cycles and summer humidity do to exposed metal on a roof line. Corrine Halstead has lost count of how many Rockville chimneys she’s walked where the cap outlasted the crown it was supposed to protect, then quietly failed at the same corner every time: the one facing west, where afternoon storms hit hardest.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco makes caps in three configurations: single-flue (SC Series), multi-flue (MC Series), and the draft-boosting vacuum series (V Series) for masonry flues in older Rockville homes. The model number is stamped on the underside of the base plate, but on a rusted unit the stamp is often gone. What we do instead is measure. The two numbers that matter are the outside diameter of your clay flue tile and the clearance from the tile top to the cap lid. A single-flue Famco SC cap clamps to the outside of the tile and expands to fit a half-inch range, which sounds forgiving on paper but can be the exact source of the problem if someone installed the wrong size a decade ago and called it close enough.

If the flue tile measures 13″ by 13″ outside, you need the Famco SC-13, not the 12.5″ with the clamp maxed out. We see that mismatch on older brick colonials near King Farm, where the flues run narrow and nobody measured twice. OEM Famco is what we default to. The steel gauge and leg geometry are consistent, and we’ve never had an OEM base crack at the bend. There are decent aftermarket equivalents on the market, but for Famco-to-Famco replacement, the savings is usually less than $40 and the fit tolerances get sloppier. We stock Famco SC and MC caps on the truck in the most common Rockville sizes, and anything unusual is three days out through our parts network, alongside DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco components.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Water pooling around the firebox floor after rain. The cap’s drip edge has rusted or the lid has lost its pitch. Water runs down the flue wall instead of shedding off the cap perimeter.
  • Metallic clattering from the chimney on windy days. The legs or clamp ring have loosened where they grip the flue tile. The cap is moving, and movement means a cracked crown is next.
  • Acorn shells, nesting material, or dead leaves inside the fireplace. The mesh screen has pulled free of the frame. Once the mesh is open, the flue is open. We pulled a full squirrel nest out of a Rockville flue in March that had enough material to fill a five-gallon bucket.
  • Rust bloom staining the tile or cap base. Galvanized steel sacrifices its zinc layer to corrosion before failing structurally. Once you see red rust bands, the base usually has two winters left, not five.
  • Draft problems that weren’t there last season. A sagging lid or blocked mesh changes the exit velocity. The fireplace burns cooler and pushes smoke back into the room on high-pressure days.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

The installed range in Rockville is $340-$620 for a Famco cap, with most single-flue replacements landing between $380 and $480. The cap itself runs $90-$210 depending on the SC or MC series and flue size. Labor and mounting hardware run the rest, and our price is written before anyone starts.

Item Range
Famco SC Series cap (single flue) $90 - $160
Famco MC Series cap (multi-flue) $170 - $210
Install labor, mounting hardware, sealant $250 - $410

What moves the number: roof pitch, access from the driveway, whether the old crown needs a patch before the new cap seats properly, and whether you need an MC multi-flue cap that spans two clay tiles. What never changes is what leaves with you: a written scope before work starts, a written warranty on the install when it’s done, and a documented photo record of the new cap seated on the tile under Haven Standard Clause 4.

DIY or Call Us?

This is a roof-height part, and we treat it like one. If your chimney is a single-story run with a walkable pitch and you’re comfortable on a ladder with both hands free, swapping a single-flue Famco cap is a two-hour Saturday job. The most common DIY failure we see in Rockville is cross-threading the clamp against a flue tile that isn’t square, then discovering in November that the cap is sitting a quarter-inch off center and catching the wind like a sail.

What we’d ask you to check before you climb: is the flue tile intact, or was the old cap hiding a cracked tile corner? Cracked tile plus a new cap equals a good-looking chimney that still leaks at the joint. The camera doesn’t guess. Neither do we. If you’d rather know the tile is solid before buying a cap, call us at (571) 376-7052 and we’ll do the measurement, the tile check, and the install in one visit.
