Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Rockville Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco chimney caps in Rockville, with most replacements running $380 to $640 installed, including the cap, all mounting hardware, and a written warranty. We keep the common Gelco sizes on the truck, so in most cases the swap happens in one visit. Most Rockville homeowners discover they need this work the same way: they spot rust streaks on the crown, find a cap in the yard after a storm, or hear rain drumming down the flue during a March nor’easter.

Gelco makes a solid cap. We’ve installed hundreds of them across Montgomery County. But no cap survives Maryland weather forever, and a failed cap is an open invitation for water, squirrels, and the occasional starling to move into your flue. The repair itself is straightforward when the measurements are right. The trick, as with most chimney work, is knowing what you’re looking at before you start.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco’s line splits into two families: the standard single-flue caps (often sold as the GC series in black galvanized or stainless) and the larger multi-flue or “outside mount” caps used on wider masonry crowns that cover two or more flues. If your cap has a mesh band around the sides and a solid lid, you’re almost certainly looking at a single-flue unit. Multi-flue caps are wider, flatter, and anchored to the crown with corner brackets rather than a center post.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Rockville homeowners: the cap size is determined by the outside diameter of your flue tile, not the inside opening. A standard 8×8 flue tile measures about 8.5 inches square on the outside. Gelco caps are sized to slip over that tile, not into it. Get this wrong and you’ll be back on the ladder. Before we quote anything, we take measurements from the roof, not from a guess at ground level.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Gelco’s stainless caps hold up better in Maryland’s freeze-thaw cycle than their galvanized line. The galvanized versions are cheaper up front but start showing rust at the welds within four to six years around here. If your budget allows, we recommend the stainless. We’re an independent service provider in Rockville, not affiliated with Gelco directly, but we order from their catalog regularly because the sizing is consistent and the materials are honest.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Water in the firebox after rain. This usually means the cap’s lid has a crack or the mesh has pulled away from the frame. Water travels down the flue and pools at the smoke shelf before dripping into the firebox.
  • Rust streaks on the chimney crown. Galvanized caps corrode from the weld points first. Those streaks are iron oxide running off the cap onto the masonry, and they’ll stain the crown permanently if left alone.
  • Animal noise from the flue. A squirrel, bird, or raccoon found a gap in the mesh. Chimney swifts in particular will squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter. Once they nest, you need a removal and a new cap.
  • Debris in the firebox. Twigs, leaves, or acorns below the damper mean the mesh has failed or the cap has shifted. What’s falling in now will block the flue later.
  • Visible damage after a storm. High winds in Rockville knock loose caps clean off the flue tile. We find them in gardens, on roofs, and once in a neighbor’s driveway. If the cap is gone, the flue is open to everything.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A single-flue Gelco cap replacement in Rockville runs $380 to $520 installed for galvanized, and $500 to $640 for stainless. Multi-flue caps covering a wider crown start at $640 and go up based on the crown dimensions. The spread comes from the flue tile size, roof pitch, and whether we’re replacing mounting brackets or just the cap itself.

Every Gelco cap installation includes the cap, stainless mounting hardware, a camera scan of the flue to confirm no secondary damage, and a written warranty that covers the workmanship for three years. The price you’re quoted is the price you pay. No surprise line items, no upcharge for a difficult roof. We hand you the written scope before anyone touches a ladder, which is Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, the operating standard we’ve worked under since 2009.

The honest answer is this: a chimney cap replacement involves working on a roof at height, often on a slope, around a masonry crown that does not forgive a misstep. We never recommend homeowners do this work themselves. The cap itself is easy enough to fit once you’re up there. The roof, the ladder, and the flue tile are where the risk lives. One slip on a mossy Rockville roof is a hospital visit or worse.

What you can check safely is the condition of the cap from the ground: binoculars work fine. Look for rust, gaps in the mesh, or a cap that’s sitting crooked. If you see any of those, call us at (571) 376-7052 and we’ll bring a camera up with us. You’ll see what we see before you pay for anything.
